Mindfulness practices aren't new, they have been around for thousands of years. Recently in western healthcare, they have been formalised into the therapies of MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) and MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction).
In 2004, NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) was convinced enough of the benefits that it ruled Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy was cost effective. Its most recent advice, updated in 2007, is that it can be prescribed for people with three or more episodes of Depression.
